People are becoming increasingly aware of the food products available these days, but it can be very confusing to understand the terms. Organic, all natural, grass fed and other terms are constantly being used, yet few people truly understand what they designate. This is further complicated by the fact that strict definitions are lacking. This doesn’t mean one shouldn’t endeavor to purchase all-natural beef & steak, but it is important to determine just what definition is being used by the supplier. For this reason, the best choice for all-natural beef & steak is obtaining it from a neighborhood butcher shop that knows and can convey to the customer just what they are getting.
The USDA Food Safety Inspection Service requires beef & steak that is labeled “natural” be free of artificial flavors, coloring ingredients, chemical preservatives, and any artificial or synthetic ingredients and must not be more than minimally processed. Although this is the bare minimum for beef & steak that is labeled all-natural, many cattle ranchers take the natural designation more seriously and thus go further than what the USDA requires.
In addition to the USDA standards, many do not use antibiotics or growth-enhancing hormones on their animals. Some do not finish the cattle off in feedlots, preferring to leave them grazing in pastures until butchering time. Since grass-fed meats are richer in healthy omega-3 fats and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), they are a much healthier choice. Don’t be afraid to ask your butcher for information about their all natural beef & steak.
